June 2010

“Where the Horses Come First”

June has been one of the coldest and wettest for many years, with tracks down grading to a heavy 11 so a real slog to get through but a huge bonus for those real wet trackers.  Spring is just around the corner and we have plenty of talent preparing to take on the world such as Sheila's Star, Crafty Lady, Madame De Lago and Beltonic to name but just a few.

Rosa De Lago won very nicely at Tatura, extremely well ridden by Nick Hall to come from back in the field and arriving at the line in the nick of time!  A huge result for the enormous faith her owners have in the potential of their horses and hats off to owners such as Mal Snowden and Glenn Fielding for their incredible perseverance with continuing racing horses when the odds seem stacked against their success.  A previous mare, Chantal Sally, was an incredible story of amazing success against the odds when Mal continued to race her off a very poor performance record to eventually end up with a Listed place getter lining up for a Melbourne Cup start!

Bulletproof was also impressive, winning his fourth start this season and his second win this preparation, when trouncing a strong opposition by three lengths at Echuca on a very wet track.  This race was a heat of the hotly contested Murray Mallee Winter Sprint series so we look forward to seeing him perform in the $50,000 Final at Echuca on 23rd August.  Again a great result for Robert Curr, his family and friends and lovely to see their absolute loyalty to the JSL Racing Stables repaying dividends with, hopefully, many more in the pipeline.

It was a huge buzz for John to be instrumental in training the double at Geelong recently, when the progeny of two mares he had previously trained to win the GR I Thousand Guineas (Macedon Lady) and 10 city wins/ GR III place getter (Bourverie Mist) duly saluted the judge in their appearances on that day.  Very capably ridden by Steven Vella, Bluey's Mist won her maiden in the fastest time so far recorded for a maiden over that trip on the new Geelong all weather surface and Crafty Lady looked incredibly comfortable winning her race by three lengths under a hold.  On that effort, Crafty Lady looks capable of emulating her mother when the Caulfield Thousand Guineas comes around later in the spring.

We are having a restructuring phase in the office administration so please bear with us as we overcome any teething problems.  As always, you can, of course, contact either John or me at any time you require information directly from us.  We are always delighted to hear from you and keen to discuss your horses with you.

Looking forward to catching up with many of you in the coming weeks as the JSL team come out of the very wet winter months to start preparing for the Melbourne Spring races as well as the numerous prolific country opportunities there are on the menu for every candidate across the board of potential winners.

John and Sheila.
